Free Email Providers

It seems as though everyone is offering free email access of one type or another, some pop3 but most are web based.  It's really difficult to sort out the chaff from the wheat but here are some that are pretty good and we will be adding others as we do our research.

uReach
Well this one was hard to categorize, it's a web based email, fax, voice mail and they give you a toll free number for your voice mail, faxes etc.  It's a brand new service and is in Beta right now 05/20/99.  You are allowed 30 minutes of access to the toll free number and I'm not sure if retrieving your messages counts against that time or not.

Apexmail
A web based service with many enhancements, including forwarding and filtering.  They also offer a premium (pay) service.

Hotmail
Probably the grand-daddy of all free email services, they are a web based service but now users of FrontPage Express 5 can access their email without having to go to the hotmail website.  I have used it and it does work quite well.
Hotmail although does have some limitation, such as no forwarding, and it's getting harder to find a unique user ID because their are so many people using this service.

Hotpop
This service has both web based and pop3/smtp accounts.  You have to fill out a rather lengthy and somewhat personal questionnaire. Also they will place your account on hold if you fail to use it for 30 days.  They also send you email from their advertisers (although you know this going in), that's how they make their money. It's over all a pretty reliable service and you can send and receive from either your email program or the web based program which makes it quite convenient.

Nettaxi
Nettaxi offers both pop3/smtp and web based email services.  Although occasionally down for some reason for the most part they are a reliable service, you also get a web page.  Combined size for both email and webspace is 3 megs.

USA.NET
This service is web based and has been around a while, we used the service at it's beginning and weren't all that happy with it (too much down time and too slow), but from what we've been told things have improved quite a bit so it's probably worth checking out.
